Accountability Report

What I Said

Spoke out and supported a new library in our Tillicum Gorge community. I believe that libraries are community resources and provide every man, woman and children an opportunity to “discover” through literature. Investing in libraries is just as important as investing in recreation facilities, one works the mind and the other the body!

In 2007, I was pleased that we opened our new Centennial Library in the Tillicum Gorge community

What I Said

Spoke out on the need for “green building incentives.

What I Did

  • Worked with development community and Saanich to adopt our Green Building Policy. This term we completed the second phase for the Development Community. I see opportunities around creativity in building our community based on looking at the “big picture” including climate change, healthy community, smart growth and sustainability as guiding principles.

What I Said

Spoke out for seniors and the need to work with businesses, Saanich and community members to make Saanich Senior Friendly.

What I Did

  • Developed Saanich's Senior Friendly project in the Shelbourne area
  • Worked with Saanich Engineering on applying for a Local Motion Grant to rehabilitate sidewalk ramps in the Shelbourne area due to seniors' concerns
  • Presented the Shelbourne area project to the World Health Organization's forum in Vancouver
  • Was asked by the Ministry of Health to be Saanich's Community Leader for the WHO's Age Friendly Project
  • Organized and worked with the team to hear from different sectors like Saanich staff, businesses, care givers and seniors, on what some of the challenges and opportunities there were as seniors age. What could we do to make them more able to stay in their neighborhoods longer, age in place.
  • Prepared a motion that asked the Union of BC Municipalities to prepare a policy paper on Home Support and the need to improve it to allow our seniors to age in their homes with dignity. This paper was adopted by the convention in September.
  • Worked with VIHA to provide Personal Health Record booklets to Cordova Bay 55+members as a demonstration project.

What I Said

Spoke out to have both the Provincial and Federal government commit to sharing in the costs of sewage treatment.

CRD now has commitments from both the Provincial and Federal government.

What I Said

Spoke out that the CRD should not be a “partner” in the P3 (public private partnership) VIHA wanted with respect to the addition of the Jubilee Tower. VIHA would not allow the CRD to be part and parcel of reviewing the numbers or business plan. They felt that a 40% partner was not the main partner... but to me, we are a significant partner and all our dealings with VIHA should reflect that.

In the end CRD provided a set amount, and we received a letter of commitment from VIHA that we would not be part of the P3, that we would not be asked for more money if the P3 costs more, and that our commitment is stated in the letter.

What didn't happen in this term?

green transportation

We did not establish a Regional Transportation Authority to manage our transportation in an integrated “regional” approach.
