Current Issues

Important issues that are effecting us all, right now.

So how many trees does Saanich plant annually?

  • 2003: 159
  • 2004: 171
  • 2005: 77
  • 2006: 186
  • 2007: 101

100s of trees a year are lost in Saanich through development and underground servicing. We need to establish a “financial” commitment in our budget for replacements.

We need trees, they are part of our green infrastructure. They help with storm water, clean the air and help us with our commitments in our climate action plan.

Saanich's Bicycle & Pedestrian Mobility Committee

I’m pleased to be the Chair of Saanich’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee. We have been busy but I would encourage you to write if you have any issues that impact your walking or cycling environments in our community.

Housing for All

  • Secondary suites are in Saanich and we need to work with neighborhoods to move this issue forward. Secondary suites are an affordable option for many.
  • Transitional housing is needed to help residents who need support services
24 hours/7 days a week as they try to move forward in their lives.
  • Coop Housing needs to be considered. This form of housing allows for entry into housing without a large financial outlay. We need the Provincial and Federal Government to develop a National/Provincial Housing Investment Program.

How do we sustain our economy... how do we help our businesses?

Saanich has been slow and quite honestly, not engaged in working with our business community. I have been a business owner and operator since 1980... no I did not inherit a family business... I started it from scratch... went through the first 3 years struggling... but finally had two businesses and great staff. In fact I would not have run for municipal office if my staff had not been so great. I now operate a small consulting business focusing on marketing, direct mail and organizing forums.

The Climate is Changing... What’s Next for Saanich?

In 1985 Saanich was the first municipality to approve an Energy Conservation Policy. In 1998, after attending a Federation of Canadian Municipalities Conference, I brought forward a report to Saanich Council that Saanich join FCM’s 20% Club - the aim was to reduce our GHG emissions - our plan back then - plant more trees annually, develop more cycling lanes and densify in areas where services were.

Local Food and the Future

The future of our food supply should be all our business, and it is of particular concern here on Vancouver Island because we grow only five percent of what we eat.

Do you plant a vegetable garden?

gardening

Did you know that if a disaster happened, there is only enough food supplies available for three days.

My parents always had a vegetable garden when I was growing up.

I’m planning to plant some edible plants in my front yard (too many deer in the back!) … back to growing some veggies and getting my hands in the dirt... what fun!
