Seniors Issues

Population Statistics

Our population has increased by 16,000 since 1993. We are projected to grow to 119,300 by 2026.

Currently we account for 33% of the region’s population.

Demographic factors are changing. In 2006, 23% of our population was over the age of 55. By 2026, one in three people will be over the age of 55.

Healthy Aging

In Saanich our maturing population enjoy gardening, cycling, walking and the many parks and gardens. I, together with my Healthy Saanich Committee, developed the Senior Friendly Project for the Shelbourne Corridor. This project worked with seniors and businesses in the area to raise awareness of the ways a community can adapt to the changing needs of this population group.

Saanich 100th - Pioneer Tea

Councillors Judy Brownoff & Vicki Sanders, in heritage costumes for the Saanich 100th Pioneer Tea

I had the pleasure of organizing and hosting Saanich’s Pioneer Tea. It was a great event and dressing in period costume added to the enjoyment of our over 350 guests. One Saanich resident attending was 102 years young!
